A Source-Based Essay on Coffee

 

In The Washington Post article, “Americans are drinking more ‘gourmet’ coffee. This doesn’t mean they’re drinking great coffee” by Tim Carman informs Americans of the new trend that they are facing in the coffee world. . Carman, a food reporter, uses the National Coffee Association USA  annual survey as evidence to see what Americans like to drink. Through this survey they found that “coffee still remains the NO.1 drink: Sixty-three percent of the respondents said they drank a coffee beverage” (Carman). In which allows the author to use data from the survey to see how Americans are becoming addicted to coffee but also the trend on the idea of consuming “gourmet coffee” preferably. 

In the blog The Perfect Grind, the newsletter “How Coffee Initiatives Can Help Save Lives” by Nicole Motteux describes the effects that coffee can take besides helping your health but coffee influences countries aid. As Motteux is a doctor who advocates the relation between health and coffee. In which she wants people to know coffee social enterprises never know puts coffee lovers money into good use. The blog has multiple resources in which you could obtain coffee and benefit countries through different sources.

The academic journal “Tea, coffee, caffeine intake and the risk of cardio-metabolic outcomes: findings from a population with low coffee and high tea consumption” by Zahra Gaeini , Zahra Bahadoran , Parvin Mirmiran and Fereidoun Azizi discuss the idea of consuming a form of caffeine having a positive impact on your health. Scientist of the Nutrition and Endocrine Research Center did a study that shows both sides of those who consume caffeine and those who do not with the impact of the effects of coffee in their systems. 

In the magazine article “Coffee and Brain Health” Steven M. Helschien informs its readers of the ways coffee can improve your health and help your body function effectively. Helschien a doctor of health who is passionate about progressive health issues and encouraging people toward greater health and wellbeing. He includes the background of coffee to establish the base of where it comes from. In addition, research information indicating the impact that drinking coffee can have in your system allows your brain to work more efficiently” (Helschien).

The newspaper article was written to present the new trend that is uprising among coffee lovers. There is a new change on what people used to prefer for coffee as the data collected shows how the gourmet coffee percentage went up by seven percent from last year’s survey (Carman). The data collected in the survey by the National Coffee Association USA depicts the authors evidence to back up his ideals of coffee becoming “gourmet beans” a reliable source.

The blog’s newsletter was written to inform that coffee can help improve countries when  “commercial business practices to raise money for social, environmental, and financial projects in developing countries” (Motteux). Natural disasters occur in various countries that maintain coffee plantations,  and social enterprises offer aid to maintain their resources. In which case the blog has gathered organizations and partnerships to inform people of the aid and resources of coffee.

The academic journal was not written just for research but rather show people statistical numbers of the ways that coffee has helped people improve their systems. As Gaeini found that “A moderate daily dose of caffeine have been shown to be associated with decreased risk of metabolic disorder” (Gaeini). The study taken from individuals who participated in this experiment proved the point that consuming coffee can alter the chances of your system having heart related diseases.

The magazine article was written to not only show that it can prevent heart disease but improve the efficiency of the brain. People consume some sort of caffeine everyday, however, those who drink coffee frequently are mainly benefitted by it. As Helschien studied the effects that it can have upon your brain when it “stimulates the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter in the brain” (Helschien). In which helps improve your brain’s functions to efficiently occur. 

The Washington Post article targets consumers and coffee shops to see the change that the coffee world is undergoing at the moment. The author portrays this idea by stating that the gourmet coffee increased this year  “it’s still super-new to the coffee world”, which informs the readers of the changes that are appearing in the coffee industry. 

The Perfect Daily Grind article focus on the ways that coffee industries can uptake through their profits to benefit native coffee countries. It has an optimistic tone to the idea that the “coffee industry is strongly linked to the social sustainability of communities around the world” (Motteux). The author uses examples of coffee enterprises that provide aid communities and makes sure that they could also benefit the consumers. On the other hand the rest of the sources focus on the ways that research shows how coffee is beneficial for your health.

The academic journal article is cautionary of the impact of coffee in your health when two groups were under an experiment to see the data collected. The author presents those results to prove that “the risk of CVD decreased by 15% in subjects who consumed 3-5 cups of coffee per day” (Gaeini). Whereas the rest of the sources focus more on the mental health efficacy that occurs when consuming coffee.

The Townsend Letter magazine article is assertive and encouraging towards people drinking coffee to prevent diseases and improve brain efficiency. It aims to show the ways that “caffeine not only stimulates the central nervous system but may act as a mild antidepressant by boosting production of neurotransmitters in the brain” (Helschien) . In relation to the academic journal it shows research but its only referencing it rather than being done by the author.

The genre of the article is from a newspaper that always informs their wide-range of readers of the new changes that society is facing today by posting new articles everyday. This specific article from The Washington Post uses the survey to set their readers of what is going on with today’s changes in the coffee world when “The lines haven’t been defined clearly in the specialty sector” (Carman).  Defining that they use data to present to their daily readers of what is going on daily using formal and informative writing.

The blogs genre is a blog that post multiple newsletter to show the ways that coffee can benefit your health and the ways that social enterprises of coffee can aid countries. Various authors of the blog include multiple doctors who work towards nutrition and health, and coffee lovers working to improve their community. They write formally but in the intend for those who might not love coffee but want to help other countries to take action. In comparison to the rest of the sources that only inform their readers of ways that coffee is beneficial for your health.

The genre of the report is an academic journal. It contains background of cardiovascular diseases and research from a control and experimental group to see the effects of participants who consume different types of caffeine. Thus, providing clear evidence that one of the greatest sources of caffeine is coffee that prevents cardiovascular diseases. However, the rest of the resources focus on other topics than just heart diseases. It is for a general audience to read when they define any medical terms, in the same way, the magazine adds definition and background. 

The “Coffee and Brain Health” magazine article is from the Townsend Letter that always prints different topics. It always informs its readers of “the variety of alternative medicine topics” (About). The writers are doctors that would do research and references to go deeper into any subjects. Similarly to the rest of the sources that use research to back up their evidence or some sort of research to back up their claim. 

All the articles seem to have the same stance that coffee can be beneficial for people to consume. Both the magazine and academic journal helps improve the health of people with risk of cardiovascular diseases and brain efficiency. In the magazine the author explains how the scientific community studied coffee in depth, and found premium coffee to be a superfood, rich in antioxidants and beneficial for health, performance, and longevity” (Helschien). The same way that they present in the academic journal with their experiment showing data that they collected to prove how coffee is a healthy substance preventing diseases.

Additionally, both the website and newspaper focus on the way that coffee social enterprises are affected. The Perfect Daily Grind blog post explains the way that organizations and social enterprises have taken a turn for the people by using “100% of the profits from its daily coffee sales to fund World Vision Australia’s emergency relief work and community development projects” (Motteux). Similarly to the newspaper show data of changes that social enterprises have taken when the coffee community is undergoing a new trend of “gourmet coffee” (Carman). They use data to back up their evidence of what social enterprises are doing to keep up with society’s standards at the moment.

Consuming coffee is advertise to benefit your health and society’s needs as it is evident in the magazine and newspaper. In the Townsend Letter magazine, the author states that those “ who drank at least four cups of coffee every day reduced their risk of depression by up to 20%” as the greater quality and amount of caffeine is higher(Helschien). This portrays how coffee can reduce anxiety but also serves as a way to show how many cups of coffee a person can consume and be beneficial for your health. The stance of the newspaper reflects Helschien data when the author states, “The coffee ‘also must possess at least one distinctive attribute in the body, flavor, aroma or acidity.’” (Carman). This illustrates the relationship that coffee quality has a greater amount of caffeine also becomes beneficial in terms of health. Therefore, both the magazine and newspaper conclude that the quality of coffee affects the amount of caffeine and health benefits that go into your system.
